Updating my own practice by completing set video tutorials
I have recently been watching Karl Taylor's videos on food photography. This blog is what I have learned from doing a similar process to Karl in his video.
The video was on - Healthy living flat lay: Raw vegetables
The first thing to consider is planning beforehand, which I felt like I did, but after watching this video I realised that I do need to prepare and plan more.
The first element I need to consider is the section of the plan view shot I will see when I take a photograph.
I have used a varnished wooden board, with a camera set at a plan view and I have marked out what I can see on live view with masking tape.
The photo above shows the lighting I plan on using, the placement of the vegetables and them all within the masking tape frame.
Things I realise that I need to work on:
Creating an atmosphere
Work with colours and tones
Season
I tend to place my objects where I think look nice, then take the time to consider what I am trying to portray and my composition.
The next thing that I have learned is to consider having your light at a low angle and using different types of reflectors, and light sources to portray natural light. I have access to a softbox and reflectors for my own practice, but after listening to set ways to light a set. I am considering buying more equipment.
I would like some small mirrors to use to reflect light onset areas, look into smaller lighting, a larger reflective card and a para attachment for my lights. All of these things will help me add light, and direct light and make images look natural.
These are the images that I have edited on lightroom from this setup, I have a plan view and a side view.
Thank you to Karl Taylor for providing the opportunity for me to develop my own practice.
